What causes Headaches & Neck Pain?

Please reach us at musclemedicinemelbourne@outlook.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Headaches associated with spinal misalignment often arise when dysfunctional cervical segments irritate surrounding muscles, joints, and neural pathways. Misalignment of the upper cervical spine increases tension in suboccipital tissues, which can refer pain into the head and contribute to combined neck pain and cervicogenic headaches. Evidence shows that cervical instability may also affect vertebral artery flow, as misaligned structures can mechanically restrict or impede blood supply to the brain, reducing oxygen delivery and altering vascular dynamics. This disruption has been linked to symptoms such as dizziness, cognitive dulling, and brain fog, commonly reported in patients with upper‑cervical dysfunction.

Additionally, upper cervical misalignment can irritate the brainstem, impair cerebrospinal fluid flow, and alter autonomic regulation, contributing to neurological pathway changes involved in headache generation, sensory processing, and pain modulation. Together, these vascular and neuro‑mechanical factors explain how spinal misalignment can induce headaches, neck pain, and cognitive symptoms.

Myotherapist utalise a multimodal intervention aproach's through , dry needling, cupping, myofascial release, and cervical–thoracic mobilisation to restore motion, reduce neural irritation, and improve biomechanics, leading to clearer neurological function, reduced headache intensity, and better neck mobility. To manage cervicogenic headaches, mechanical neck pain, muscular tension, and nerve‑root irritation.
